Nicaragua–A Random Place to Be

Day 24: Granada, Nicaragua

Ate the cheapest breakfast on the main street this A.M (Banana pancakes—not great) and some terrible organic coffee. We dined with an unexpected guest: a little tail-less street dog with lonely but vaguely dignified eyes. He laid in the shade of our table’s big umbrella to escape the awful heat and used Saben’s foot as a pillow. Poor little thing! He didn’t beg for food even one time, but seemed more inclined to just be near someone who didn’t mind him being there too. Read the rest of this entry »

Welcome to San Salvador…Texas?

Day 21: Bus from Flores, Guatemala to San Salvador, El Salvador

Bought a ticket yesterday for today’s long bus ride at the same tour agency that we got our Tikal transportation from. We paid $30 each and made sure to ask (three times) that it would be a direct bus on a Pullman (the big “Greyhound” type, not the reconditioned old school bus, aka “Chicken bus”). However, like most things, the 9 hour “direct” bus turned into a 12 hour stop-every-quarter-mile-or-so-to-pick-up-more-passengers-than- there-are-seats ride. Read the rest of this entry »

Do you want a hotel, No. Then let me ask you a question do you like cannibis?

Day 18 – Travel day – Panajchel, Guatemala to Flores, Guatemala

We decided to cut out of Panajchel. It’s pretty boring and very touristy, very much not our kind of place. So, we bought a bus ticket up to Flores to see Tikal (the whole reason we came to Guatemala). Read the rest of this entry »

Buy me Coca Cola?

Day 17: Panajchel, Guatemala

Very sad to leave Antigua this morning. We can’t wait to come back! Took a 7AM shuttle bus to Panajchel to check out Lake Atilan. It was full of very rude, old Americans, a few Germans, and us (smack in the middle and quite unhappy about our obnoxious countrymen (and women). Read the rest of this entry »

Boring work day

Day 16 – Antigua, Guatemala

Slow day today, working on the website and getting some posts caught up after we were Internet-less for the past week or so. The hostel we are staying at has some nice high speed Internet so we are make full use of it, but we end up getting caught up on news and gossip more than post writing.

We did leave the hostel for a little bit today to keep our sanity. Walked around town for a bit and got some very good ice cream. Read the rest of this entry »

Schtick for me?

Day 15: Antigua, Guatemala

We absolutely LOVE Antigua! It’s pretty much one of the greatest places in the world. The atmosphere is very casual and relaxed and just generally very comfortable. Read the rest of this entry »

Our First Truck Ride

Day 10: Traveling (Roatan to San Pedro Sula)

Caught a taxi from our dorm in West End to the port at 5:45AM (interesting ride at 5 something in the morning…try putting 6 people into a 4-person car…cozy) and waited for an hour to board the ferry. Read the rest of this entry »

The Last Hurrah.

Day 9: Roatan, Honduras

This morning we had breakfast with a couple of new Australian bunkmates who are visiting the island to get their Dive Masters. We traded travel stories and tips while eating pancakes at “the shack” (50 Lps, or $2.63) with fresh butter and strawberry marmalade. Yummy! Today we laid around on the beach all day till the sunshine faded from the sky. Great day just relaxing in the sun (ok, and maybe recovering a little bit from the last couple of nights…). The fish keeps looking at me!

Day 4: Roatan, Honduras

Started early in the morning with some more classroom work learning about nitrogen narcosis and decompression sickness—fun way to start the day. Read the rest of this entry »
