Paradise Found

Day 69: Trinidade, Brazil

There`s something magical about being the first one awake in the morning. It`s like being in another world while the rest of humankind sleeps, just knowing that no one can disturb you as you tiptoe out of the room where they are dreaming and pleasantly snoring away. Read the rest of this entry »

The perfect day and night

Day 68: Paraty, Brazil

That subtle smell that always accompanies a fishing village permeated the air while we zigzagged through the historic center, admiring the clean white paint on the walls and the colorful doorways. Making our way lazily down toward the water, we came to the boat dock. The old, worn ropes and the chipping paint on the small fishing boats were like old friends–so charming and obviously well-loved.

I think I´m actually melting

Day 67: Paraty, Brazil

Maybe it was jealousy as our sweet 3rd story pad, but our bunkmates at Botafogo were the worse we´ve ever had–ever worse than that guy with his crazy night noises in Uvita, Costa Rica! They were all up at 5:45am, talking really loud and slamming doors and opening the window to let in bright sunlight that looked more like midday than early morning. One of them had dragged the mattress of the bed (bottom bunk, sucker!) to try to get more air from the fan but had left the room and was sleeping on the couch outside the room when we left. What the hell?! Read the rest of this entry »

A day in the life of a tourist

Day 66: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Well, after much resistance, today we went sightseeing like every other tourist. Admittedly, we did see some awesome stuff but it´s just not very exciting or very personal to be knocked and jostled around by 50 other tourists snapping pictures and posing and being generally inconsiderate about their fellow sightseers. Everyone´s going to have a chance to look and take photos so why de so pushy and rude? There´s no reason for that now, come on! Read the rest of this entry »

Whale´s Tail

Day 42: Uvita, Costa Rica

An hour and a half or so from the hostel to the very end of the beach and we arrived at the Whale´s Tail. Although it´s difficult to make out while you´re standing on the Tail, from the sky you can see how this part of the beach got it´s name.

This is the life

Day 41: Uvita, Costa Rica

After a yummy “homemade“ breakfast we cooked at the hostel, we gathered our miscellanous beach wares and set out for a whole day on the beach. The walk from the hostel takes about 40 minutes but is pleasant despite the heat of the early morning sun. To make it easier, we stopped for some admittedly early in the morning ice cream cones. Welcome to Paradise

Day 40: Uvita, Costa Rica

Still groggy from yesterday´s travel (bus travel makes one very lethargic), we sauntered down the street back to the bus terminal and hopped a bus to Uvita. It was headed down the “slow“ road along the coast and crawled the whole way, probably never going over 30 mph. Luckily, we got to sit in the handicap seats with a lot of leg room since no one actually needed them on this trip. Read the rest of this entry »

To Beach or Not to Beach?

Day 32: San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

Ugh…this morning midway through cooking an otherwise scrumptious breakfast, we both found ourselves in the throes of a beast we´ve not yet met on this trip: food poisoning. Read the rest of this entry »

Surely it´s just over this next hill

After yesterday´s unpleasant beach experience, we are aching for some relaxing, more beautiful beach time today. Thinking of getting in some exercise before our day of laying around, we rented bicycles from another hostel a few blocks from Casa Oro for $6 each for the day (a bit expensive really, but we are in a rather touristy town). Sand bullet firing squad

Day 31: San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

Being in a beach town without any swimming shorts can become a legal issue in most countries. Wishing to avoid all that messy paperwork in spanish, we made a market run to find a pair of trunks to preserve Saben´s modesty (after all, he is ever so modest). Read the rest of this entry »
