The Tale of Mt Sinai & Muffins the Racist Dragon

May 30, 2009 – Day 156 – Nuweiba, Egypt

After hiking for nearly 3 hours, we summited Mt Sinai and found a hidden cubby to shield ourselves from the chilling wind until the light of dawn began to peak. And when it did, it was really splendid.

Various sun related fun

May 29, 2009 – Day 155 – Dahab, Egypt

This place just gets better and better with each day we are here! It`s beautiful, warm and sunny, has great food, and an island pace. More snorkeling today and laying in the sun to tan. Tonight we hike Mount Sinai to see the sun rise tomorrow morning. No sleep tonight but it should be worth it. We shall see…

Above water adventures

May 28, 2009 – Day 154 – Dahab, Egypt

Saben started the day with a morning dive (Penguin Divers, 18 euros includes all equipment). But to be honest, Saben`s dive wasn`t very exciting. They went to “The Islands”, where we had been snorkeling yesterday, and he didn`t see anymore diving than he did snorkeling! Still it was a great way to brush up on his mad diving skills.

Underwater Adventures

May 27, 2009 – Day 153 – Dahab, Egypt

Few things better than snorkeling in the Red Sea. Parrot fish, clownfish, lion fish, flute fish, barracuda, and a mass of other fish too plentiful to name were waiting just below the surface as we trucked off to “The Islands” dive site.

Why is this seat so small!

May 26, 2009 – Day 152 -  Dahab, Egypt

Despite the firm declarations of the bus attendant, driver, and ticket guy the bus to Dahab was NOT 12 hours but turned out to be 17! On top of that, it was the most uncomfortable 17 hours of our lives and we now have multiple bruises and perhaps even some permanent bone-reshaping from the unusually tiny dimensions of the bus interior.

Yaris…Fierce Mountain Destroyer

May 4, 2009 – Day 130 – Tinos, Greece

Stepping off the ferry onto Tinos, we quickly sized up the tiny isle. It was perfect for us. Despite the cold weather and fierce winds with clouds threatening rain at any second, we were ecstatic at everything that lay before us. It was the white buildings with classic Greek blue shutters and rich pink flowers in the window sill, small streets winding uphill and between buildings, the absence of people and thus, the absence of noise. Everything came together to make us forget the crummy weather and appreciate the misty fog passing across the highest mountains and ancient stone walls and the numerous dovecotes left over from Venetian rule around the 18th and 19th centuries. We spent the day driving around in our tiny rented Yaris admiring the charming countryside of the island.

Small Fried Fish

May 3, 2009 – Day 129 – Rafina, Greece

Small fried fish, if you saw that on the menu, what would you expect? One small fried fish one a plate, right? Yeah me too, but in fact that small phrase can mean more than one thing. In Greece apparently it means ”TWENTY (very) small fried fishes.” So while Saben sucked away at his jumbo shrimp, Lin was throwing down some serious fish carnage.

Saben… Surfer Amigo

Day 116: Lima, Peru

I’ve never met a surfer who was stressed out about anything. Carlos, a lawyer turned surf instructor, was certainly no different. We made our way down to the beach from town to a small tent right on the beach which serves as the Pukana Surfer School (http://www.pukanasurferschool.com). Standing around 5 feet tall with abs of steel and a big smile that never left his lips, Carlos went from being a serious teacher to a fun surfer buddy as he taught Saben the essentials of surfing. Although lessons are an hour($16 including wet suit and board), the first 15 minutes is serious on-land warm-up / practice. Then you get your magnormous long board especially for first timers and it’s time to get wet. Having absolutely no interest in surfing herself, Lin was enlisted as photographer for the day, chronicling Saben’s attempts at surfing.

Surf n`Turf

Day 73: Trinidade, Brazil

Lin looked down at her knees. They burned red like fire and bits of tiny broken shells stuck to them like barnacles. Saben sat several feet farther out where the water was deep enough for him to protect his knee. Unable to help herself,  Lin sat back down in the shallow, forceful surf just feet off shore and let the waves pull her body toward the sea and then spit her back up on shore like a beached jellyfish. The air was so hot she didn`t care about scraping her knees on the sand as she was tugged and tossed around. She just wanted to cool off from the blistering sun. Read the rest of this entry »

A day at the beach, with a twist

Day 70: Trinidade, Brazil

It all started with a sweet lonely puppy.  She was clearly bored and her owner nowhere in sight when she spotted us walking down the beach. Like her, we were strays today too.  Her sweet eyes kept glancing at us, hoping we would see her and acknowledge that she was there too. And with such sweet brown eyes, how could we not?
